At Senpower Ltd, we are skilled legally qualified advocates with SEND parent carer experience that support parents and carers of children with Special Education Needs and disabilities across the UK to assert their rights, represent their interests and achieve what they need through facilitating resolutions of dispute and conflicts, challenging hostile policies by promoting better practice. We reach positive outcomes by working collaboratively. We find that this approach takes the stress out of negotiations and mobilizes situations that have reached an impasse . We understand how to cut through the bureaucracy and get to the nub of the issues as quickly and efficiently as possible. Advocacy is promoting and defending a person’s rights, needs and interests.
An advocate is someone who speaks up for others. A Senpower advocate will find information, go along to meetings as a support person if necessary, and write letters for you.
Many people can speak up for their own rights, needs and interests, but some find it hard. Often parents of Children with disability, autism or other additional needs can struggle to speak up for themselves or don’t have the ability to do it. They might need support from an advocate.
How a Senpower advocate will work with you
Step 1: understand the issue
We will make sure we have a clear understanding of the issues your child with disability, autism or other additional needs is facing. For example, your child’s school might say they’re having difficulty getting funding and support to ensure your child is included in class activities throughout the day.
Step 2: understand your child’s needs
We will understand your child’s needs and the support that can help them, we will learn from you about your child’s needs and interests.
Step 3: think about what you want for your child
Helping you understand what your child needs are and their statutory entitlement.
There might also be solutions that you haven’t thought of, so we will work together to get as much information as possible. You could ask other people what they think. This way you can make an informed decision about what to do.
For example, you might think that your child could take part in all class activities if the teacher adjusted the activities to better suit your child’s level of understanding.
You need to be sure that what you want is in your child’s best interests. This includes thinking about any possible negative consequences and how they could be managed. For example, does your child also need some periods of the day in a quieter area with fewer children around?
Step 4: present a solution
We will support you in presenting solutions that are effective rather than complaining. For example, you might say, ‘I understand this is a challenging situation. I want to work closely with you and other professionals to make sure my child’s learning needs are met using the resources available.’
We will support you to ask the questions that will help gain the right support. For example, you might say, ‘Can you let me know what adjustments you’re making so that my child is included in activities?’
We always endeavor to agree the support the child needs through negotiation and mediation, by facilitating discussions and attending meetings however if necessary we can support the appeal process to the Special Education Needs Tribunal
